Parks and Recreation Areas.

Cigarette butt litter at picnic areas, golf courses, soccer fields and ballparks, hiking paths, and other wilderness or recreation areas mar the natural beauty of these places. It can also create fires, and may injure wildlife. Tobacco litter represents 31.5% of litter in parks and other outdoor recreation areas.1 To prevent cigarette butt litter in these areas:

  • Feature signage at transition points.
  • Add receptacles at parking lots, scenic overlooks, or other access areas.
  • Remind those using recreation areas that “pack it in, pack it out” includes cigarette butt litter to ensure no harm to the natural resources or the ecosystem.

What You Can Do

Outfit golf carts with cup ashtrays and provide cigarette butt litter prevention education. In Dorchester County, SC, this decreased cigarette butt litter by 73%.

Park rangers and other uniformed staff at state parks in Arkansas and Florida are providing pocket ashtrays to visitors—and helping to get approval for new ash receptacles.
