Kick-off cigarette litter prevention program

Create a launch timetable to coordinate announcement of scan results, public education, installation of ash receptacles, and distribution of pocket ashtrays. Program roll out is best if these activities are more simultaneous than sequential. As a guide, use this scheduling resource.

Hand out pocket ashtrays. Organize adult volunteers to distribute pocket ashtrays at intersections, store fronts, or green spaces in the cigarette litter prevention program area. Target places where the cigarette litter scan turned up a lot of butts.

In Washington state, a multimedia "Litter and it will hurt" campaign warns motorists of the state's serious litter fines: $1,025 for tossing a lighted cigarette. The effort has cut litter 20% on state-overseen highways and roads since it began in 2002.¹
