Gather a TASK FORCE

Round-up community leaders, businesses, elected officials, parks and recreation personnel, public works, department of transportation, and others who have a stake in the areas where a Cigarette Litter Prevention Program can have an impact. Get help identifying task force members. Select a task force leader and outline roles for other partners. Some members may be able to provide in-kind resources or funding.

Educate the task force. Share what you’ve learned. Communicate the facts about cigarette butt litter’s impact on the community and environment. Use this simple PowerPoint.

Select area for program launch. As a team, identify areas where cigarette butt litter appears to be a problem. Start in a location that matches task force member interests or where they have the most to gain from a program. For example, if most are business owners then target a downtown area as the first priority. Or, retail and pedestrian areas along a shoreline may be where cigarette butt litter is a persistent problem. Or, start with an annual community special event. How To Do It

To get businesses engaged in the Cigarette Litter Prevention Program, use this simple survey from Athens-Clarke County, GA as a model.

The City of Minneapolis and Keep Minneapolis Beautiful created an “Adopt-An-Ash-Receptacle” program. Since 2007, 13 ash receptacles have been “adopted” by Minneapolis business owners, property owners, and residents who regularly empty and maintain them.
