This Guide is intended to help community leaders build awareness about cigarette litter, influence anti-littering behavior in adult smokers, and initiate sustainable improvement in the community environment. The Guide contains all the tools needed to implement a plan of action for reducing cigarette litter in neighborhoods and city centers where cigarette litter accumulates.

The strategies outlined in this Guide are the result of two years of field testing in a dozen communities across the U.S. These field tests demonstrated that, in combination, enforcing existing anti-litter laws, adding ash receptacles, encouraging the use of pocket ashtrays, and changing behavior through public education can reduce cigarette litter by as much as 46%.

Get the facts about cigarette litter and then design a prevention program for your community.
